Basic and improver level of navigation
Cost £200 all inclusive, £130 without accommodation
Course Detail
1900 hours Friday evening to Sunday 1700 hours.
4 – 6, 11 – 13, 18 -20, 25 – 27 April.

Course Summary.
The course is designed to improve your confidence in map reading to enable you to venture into the outdoor environment safely in the knowledge that you know where you are, where you are going, how to get there and how long it may take.
We will make every effort to give you an enjoyable experience in a fabulous setting allowing you to learn at a pace that is comfortable for you.
Dependant upon experience and ability of the candidates, you will be encouraged to get the best from yourself on the course and have the opportunity to achieve a recognised navigation qualification under the National Navigation Award Scheme to either Bronze or Silver Level, or simply enjoy improving your skills - the choice is yours.
There will be maximum emphasis on working in the hills in a practical, hands on manner with a small amount of theory input in a classroom environment based in either Howtown or Pooley Bridge with the hills on our doorstep to enable us to get straight out and put theory into practice.
Friday Evening.
Reception: Coffee and Biscuits to discuss course objectives and aspirations of all regarding the weekend.
Saturday.
A full buffet lunch will be provided in either Pooley Bridge or Howtown
Sunday.
Packed lunch provided, out on the hill all day.
Evening meals are not provided.
Course Aims
Understanding Maps
Scales, symbols, the national grid system, contours and gradients.
Setting the map to the ground.
Compass.
Basic use of a compass including setting the map, taking a bearing, back bearing, re-section.
Navigation Techniques.
Route planning, timing and pacing, aiming off, attack points, following features.
General
Equipment.
You will need to come equipped for 2 days in the mountains with full waterproof clothing and warm clothing. Full list of equipment required will be issued with joining instructions.
Accommodation and Food.
Accommodation is included in the course price at the Norcroft, a high quality bed and breakfast in Penrith run by Paul Lamb. Paul is a great guy and very accommodating for outdoor pursuits, nothing is too much trouble to him.
Fitness
To get the best from the course you will need a level of fitness that will allow you to walk in the mountains for at least 6 hours per day without discomfort.
Your instructors are experienced mountaineers with at least ML qualifications and a low student to instructor ratio. Whilst the course concentrates on navigation we will give as much advice and guidance as you may need on all aspects of mountain safety.
